The Gay–straight alliance is a student-led club located in Parkland, Florida at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. We intended to provide a safe, supportive environment for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer/questioning (LGBTQ) youth (or those who are perceived as such) and their straight allies.
The goal of our gay–straight alliance is to make our school community safe, facilitate activism on campus, and create a welcoming environment for LGBT students. We participate in national campaigns to raise awareness, such as the Day of Silence, National Coming Out Day, No Name Calling Week, Transgender Day of Remembrance, Harvey Milk Day, GSA day and Anti- Bullying Week.
But we're not just a gay club! It's called gay -straight alliance!
Our straight allies are our supporters, but most importantly our friends. Our straight allies are our biggest helpers. Together we attempt to build a network of support for non-heterosexual and transgender teens, as well as raising awareness of homophobia and heterosexism, as well a transphobia.
Our club may be small (we only have about 8 to 9 members at a meeting), but we have enough heart and love to take on the world! Please join us in our mission.
We are a support group, we are a charity group, but most of the time we're just a group of teens who want nothing more than for the world to be a safe and better place for everybody.
Our club currently meets on Mondays from around 2:50 to 4:00. Our past sponsor is sadly unable to sponsor us this year, but can assure you we're doing everything in our power to find a new sponsor for our club.
