Okay guys, serious talk time. Our Gay Straight Alliance is in major danger of getting shut down. Our attendance is hitting an all time low, 3 people per meeting and 3 officers during the 2014- 2015 school year. It's not that we can't have a GSA, it's just that clubs with such low attendance get disbanded. We only have this year to get our attendance up to at least 12 members total (officers including) or it's the chopping block. for us.
Be here's the thing, we can't afford to loose this GSA. There are more LGBTQIA kids in our school, and there are sure as heck more allies then that. But it's difficult to even get someone to attend one meeting. Kids here the word "Gay" and they automatically think it's some kind of gay club and anyone who joins is gay. But it's not like that at all.
BEING IN THIS CLUB WILL NOT LABEL YOU OR MAKE YOU GAY.
We, the straight allies, the gay kids, the bi kids, the pan kids, the trans kids, are fighting a bigger fight. It's bigger than you or me or anyone else you know. An awful poison has dripped through the dregs of society and has instilled fear and hate in the hearts of those who should care about us the most. The discrimination, the name calling, the punches, the bruises, the online messages that give you a feeling of dread when you see them, these things are all what this club is fighting.
This is the 21st century. No one should have to feel fear when they hold their significant other's hand in public. No one should have to be turned away, from anywhere, because of who they love and who they are. We as a people cannot stand by idle while our brothers and sisters are 4 times more likely to end the beautiful thing that is their life. We shouldn't even need a Gay- Straight Alliance club. The entire world should be a gay- straight alliance.
Those of us in this club dream of the day where we can shut down this club because it's not needed anymore.
But for now, this club is needed. We need to show the world that we can fight back, and we will not stand for hate and discrimination in our schools. And we cannot let something like low attendance bring down this club that we and so many other desperately need.
There are kids in our schools who are terrified of going to school because of bullies and cowards who use their words to hurt others. Even if they're too scared to join, even if straight people don't want to be labelled as gay, they need to know that a club like this exists, and when they're ready they can join and be apart of something that exceeds anything else.
So if you really want to make a difference, in our school, our community, and in our world, think about joining a GSA. It doesn't even have to be this one. All you have to do is walk through our door and you'll be greeted by strangers who will seem like family after just a few weeks.
So please, seriously consider joining our club so we can make our school and the world safer for everyone.
